Can you change your GST jurisdiction?

You cannot choose your GST administering authority, and there is no form to request moving from Centre to State or the reverse. Jurisdiction does change when your registered address moves into the area of a different office, and a wrong mapping can be corrected.

What you cannot do

Requests such as 'transfer me from the Centre to the State because the State office is closer' or 'move my file to a different range because I prefer that officer' are not provided for in the law. Allocation is by the system under the GST Council's decision, and choosing an officer is not part of it.

When jurisdiction does change

  • Change of principal place of business within the State to an area covered by a different ward, circle, range or division; you select the new jurisdiction in the REG-14 amendment.
  • Administrative reorganisation by the department, such as creating new commissionerates or redrawing ward boundaries.
  • Moving to another State, which needs a new registration and therefore a fresh allocation.

Fixing a wrong mapping

Sometimes the ward or range shown on the portal does not cover your address, often because the wrong option was chosen in the application. Write to your administering office, with the GSTIN, your registered address, proof of address and the correct office according to the department's jurisdiction list, requesting correction. Corrections are carried out by the department in its own systems.

Until the mapping is corrected, keep replying to notices to whichever officer issued them. A wrong mapping is not a reason to ignore a notice, and it does not by itself make the notice invalid; if you believe the issuing officer lacks jurisdiction, say so in your reply while also answering on the merits.

Proceedings already started

A change of jurisdiction does not wipe out pending matters. A show cause notice already issued may be decided by the issuing officer or transferred internally. Watch the portal for updated hearing notices and keep the earlier officer informed if a notice comes from an office you no longer belong to. A professional can keep track of where each matter now sits.
