When you apply for cancellation in REG-16, the registration is deemed suspended from the date of application or the date from which you seek cancellation. This is automatic, not a penalty. The officer then processes the application and may raise a query before passing the order.
During this period, do not make taxable supplies or issue tax invoices. You are not required to file returns for the suspended period, but make sure every return up to the effective date of cancellation is filed. Unfiled earlier returns are a common reason for the officer to query or reject the application.
Check View Notices and Orders regularly. If a query arrives, reply within the time stated with the documents asked for. Once the cancellation order is passed, download it and file the final return in GSTR-10. Close the related e-way bill and e-invoice usage and inform regular customers.
If you applied by mistake or circumstances changed, check whether the portal still shows an option to withdraw the cancellation application. If the officer has already acted, the route depends on what was passed; a professional can review the options.
