GSTR-2A explained: the live view of what suppliers reported

GSTR-2A is a read-only, auto-drafted statement of your inward supplies built from what your suppliers and other parties report on the portal. It updates continuously as suppliers file, so it is a reconciliation tool rather than the basis for claiming input tax credit, which today rests on GSTR-2B.

Where GSTR-2A data comes from

  • Suppliers' GSTR-1, GSTR-1A and IFF for B2B invoices and notes
  • GSTR-5 of non-resident taxable persons who supplied to you
  • GSTR-6 of an input service distributor distributing credit to you
  • GSTR-7 and GSTR-8, showing TDS deducted and TCS collected in your favour
  • Customs data on imports of goods and supplies from SEZ units

GSTR-2A versus GSTR-2B

GSTR-2A is dynamic. An invoice your supplier uploads late, even months after the period, is added to the GSTR-2A of the original invoice month. GSTR-2B is a static statement generated for each period with a fixed cut-off, and Section 16(2)(aa) with Rule 36(4) ties your ITC claim to it.

Because of this, your GSTR-2A total for a month can be higher than the GSTR-2B for the same month. That difference usually represents late filings by suppliers, which will appear in a later GSTR-2B.

How to use GSTR-2A

Download it period-wise and compare it with your purchase register to find suppliers who have not uploaded invoices, have uploaded wrong amounts, or have shown your purchase as B2C. Follow up in writing so you have a record.

GSTR-2A also remains important for older years. For periods before GSTR-2B became the legal basis, departmental scrutiny in ASMT-10 and show cause notices often compare ITC in GSTR-3B with GSTR-2A, and your reply has to explain each gap with invoices, payment proof and supplier details.

Common misunderstandings

Seeing an invoice in GSTR-2A does not by itself make credit available; it must also satisfy the conditions in Section 16 and not be blocked under Section 17(5). Equally, an invoice missing from GSTR-2A for an old period is not always fatal, but the burden of proving the purchase is on you. Professionals handling scrutiny notices typically build their reply around this reconciliation.

Questions

For current periods, ITC is linked to GSTR-2B under Section 16(2)(aa). GSTR-2A is used for reconciliation and supplier follow-up.
Why does GSTR-2A keep changing?+
It is dynamic. Whenever a supplier files or amends a return for that month, the new details are added to the GSTR-2A of the original period.
