A GST credit note is a document a supplier issues to reduce the value or tax of an invoice already raised. Under Section 34 of the CGST Act it lets the supplier lower its output tax, while the buyer reduces the input tax credit it claimed.
A credit note for a financial year must be declared no later than 30 November following the end of that year, or the date of filing the annual return, whichever is earlier. After that, output tax cannot be reduced. Report it in GSTR-1 for the period in which it is issued, linked to the original invoice details. A single credit note can cover several invoices. The supplier's tax reduction is allowed only if the incidence of tax has not been passed on to someone else.
Many businesses issue credit notes for year-end rebates that were never agreed in advance. These are commercial or financial credit notes: they can be issued, but they do not reduce GST. Another error is forgetting that the buyer must accept or reflect the credit note on its side; through the Invoice Management System the buyer acts on it, and the credit claimed falls accordingly. Mismatches between the two sides often trigger DRC-01C or ASMT-10 queries.
