GST REG-02 is the acknowledgement the GST portal generates when you successfully submit a registration application such as REG-01. It carries an Application Reference Number (ARN), which is your proof of filing and the key for tracking the application.
REG-02 is system generated under Rule 8 of the CGST Rules. It is sent to the registered email and mobile number and can be downloaded from the portal. It records the ARN, the date and time of filing, the applicant's name, the form filed and the jurisdiction to which the application has gone.
The date on REG-02 fixes the date of application. That date matters for two things: the officer's time limit to act, and the effective date of registration. If you applied within 30 days of becoming liable, registration is effective from the date of liability; otherwise it runs from the date of grant.
Rule 9 sets time limits for the officer to act. If the officer neither seeks clarification nor rejects the application within the prescribed time, the application is deemed approved and the GSTIN is generated by the system. Keep checking the status and your email, because a query issued late at night or a missed REG-03 can turn into a rejection if you do not reply in time.
