An ARN, or Application Reference Number, is the unique acknowledgment number the GST portal generates when you successfully submit an application, such as a new registration, amendment, refund, cancellation or revocation. It is the reference you use to track that application.
An ARN is issued only after the form is submitted and signed with DSC or EVC. If you have only saved a draft, or the signature failed, no ARN is generated. The ARN is sent to the registered email and mobile number, and an acknowledgment can be downloaded from the portal.
On the portal, the Track Application Status option shows whether an ARN is pending for processing, pending for clarification, approved or rejected. A status of pending for clarification means an officer has raised a query, which must be answered within the time stated in the notice, or the application may be rejected.
The ARN for a return filing is different from an application ARN. Payments use a CPIN when the challan is created and a CIN once the bank confirms payment. Do not mix these up when replying to an officer or following up on a refund.
