GST registration for electronics dealers

An electronics or mobile phone dealer needs GST registration once aggregate turnover crosses Rs. 40 lakh in most states if it sells only goods, or Rs. 20 lakh if it also earns repair or service income. Because appliances and phones are high-value goods, most dealers cross the limit in their first year.

Exchange offers and used goods

In an exchange sale the customer pays partly in money and partly by handing over an old phone or appliance. Record the old item separately with its agreed value, and settle with your adviser the value on which GST is charged on the new item so that every branch bills it the same way. Resale of the old goods later is a separate taxable sale; check whether the margin scheme for second-hand goods applies before deciding how to value it.

Brand schemes and credit notes

Brands and distributors pass on price protection, target incentives and promotional support. Where the distributor issues a GST credit note linked to your purchase invoices, your ITC reduces accordingly. Where support is given as a commercial credit note without GST, your ITC is unaffected. Payments you receive for promoting or displaying a brand's products may be a separate service you supply to the brand, which affects your turnover and possibly your threshold.

Repairs, deliveries and online sales

  • Repair and installation charges are services; earning them brings the Rs. 20 lakh limit into play.
  • E-way bills are needed above Rs. 50,000 per consignment, which a delivery of a few phones or one large television can cross.
  • Record IMEI or serial numbers on invoices to match returns and warranty claims to the original sale.
  • Selling through marketplaces means TCS, which you must reconcile with the operator's GSTR-8 data and settlement reports.
  • Mobile recharge or bill payment commission is service income and counts in aggregate turnover.

Registration and setup

Apply with PAN, Aadhaar and photographs of the owner or partners, shop address proof, constitution documents and bank proof, adding any service centre or godown in the state. E-invoicing applies once aggregate turnover in any year since 2017-18 crosses Rs. 5 crore, which larger dealers reach quickly. A professional can register the business and set up consistent treatment for exchange schemes and brand credit notes.

Questions

Electronics dealers — FAQs

Do I need a separate GSTIN for my online store?+
No. Online sales are reported under the GSTIN of the state you ship from. A warehouse in another state would need its own registration.
Does selling refurbished phones need a different registration?+
No. Second-hand or refurbished goods are sold under your existing GSTIN; only the valuation method may differ.
Can an electronics dealer opt for composition?+
Yes within the Rs. 1.5 crore limit and with only intra-state sales, but business buyers get no ITC and you cannot ship to other states.
Is a brand's target incentive taxable in my hands?+
It depends on what it is for. A discount on your purchases is handled through credit notes, while payment for promotional services you provide to the brand is your own taxable supply.
