A hardware store selling tools, fasteners, paint, pipes or sanitaryware needs GST registration once aggregate turnover crosses Rs. 40 lakh in most states (lower in some special category states). If the shop also earns fitting or installation charges, the Rs. 20 lakh limit for mixed supplies applies instead.
A hardware shop usually sells to two groups: walk-in households, and plumbers, electricians, contractors and factories who buy on credit. Registered trade customers want tax invoices with their GSTIN so they can claim ITC, so a shop with substantial trade sales usually does better under the regular scheme than under composition, even below the composition limit.
Hardware stores stock thousands of small items across many HSN codes. Billing software with a clean item master, holding the HSN and tax for each product, is the most practical safeguard against wrong billing. Show 4-digit HSN codes on invoices if turnover is up to Rs. 5 crore and 6 digits above that, and update the master on the effective date whenever rates change rather than correcting bills at the counter.
When the shop supplies a geyser or tap set and also installs it for one price, the sale and installation may form a composite supply, taxed as the principal supply. Fitting charges billed independently are a service. Where a job involves fixing items into a building as part of a larger contract, check whether it is a works contract, since that changes how the job is taxed and what credit the customer can claim.
File REG-01 with the owner's PAN, Aadhaar and photograph, constitution proof for a firm, address proof for the shop and any separate godown or yard, and bank details. After approval, submit bank details within 30 days or before your first GSTR-1, whichever is earlier, to avoid suspension under Rule 10A. A professional can set up the registration, the item master and a monthly purchase reconciliation with GSTR-2B.
