GST approval guide · updated October 2026

From which date does a GST amendment take effect?

When you file a GST amendment, the portal asks for the date of change. That date and the date of your application together decide from when the amended details apply.

The rules in brief

  • Any change in registration particulars must be reported in Form REG-14 within 15 days of the change.
  • For core fields, once approved, the amendment takes effect from the date of the event that warranted it.
  • But Rule 19(1A) says no particular shall stand amended from a date earlier than the date of submission of REG-14, except by an order of the Commissioner for reasons recorded in writing.
  • Non-core changes take effect on submission.

What this means in practice

If you moved your principal place on 1 June and filed the amendment on 10 June, the change is generally recorded from the date of filing, not 1 June. If you moved in January and filed in October, the registration still showed the old address for nine months, and business at the new address during that period was business at an unregistered place.

The practical lesson is to file before or immediately after the change. If an earlier effective date genuinely matters, for example because goods were stored at a new place, an application to the Commissioner explaining the reasons is the route provided by the rule.

Consequences of late filing

There is no separate late fee for amendments, but non-compliance can attract a general penalty under Section 125. More serious consequences come from the mismatch itself: goods found at an undeclared place, a principal place found closed during verification, or a partner who has left still shown on the registration and receiving notices.

Entering the date correctly

The date of change should match the documents: the start date in the new rent agreement, the date of the partner's admission in the deed, or the date of the board resolution. A date that does not match the documents is a frequent reason for a REG-03 query. A professional can check the dates before filing.
