Non-core field amendments in GST registration

Every registration detail that is not a core field is a non-core field. Changes to these are made through Amendment of Registration Non-Core Fields on the portal and take effect on successful submission, without waiting for an officer.

Common non-core changes

  • Adding, removing or changing bank account details.
  • Description of goods and services, HSN and SAC codes, and nature of business activity.
  • Adding or changing authorised signatories and selecting the primary authorised signatory.
  • Contact details, address and other details of existing promoters, partners or directors (as opposed to adding or removing them).
  • Email address and mobile number of the authorised signatory, verified by OTP to the new contact details.
  • State-specific information and details such as nature of possession of premises.

How to file

Log in, go to Services, Registration, Amendment of Registration Non-Core Fields, open the relevant tab, edit and save, then go to Verification and submit with DSC or EVC. Companies and LLPs must sign with DSC. An ARN is generated and the change reflects in your profile once processed, usually the same day or soon after.

Bank details are validated with the bank through the system. If validation fails, the account may show as not validated; check the IFSC and account holder name exactly as in bank records.

Non-core does not mean unchecked

No approval is needed, but the officer can see the change. Adding a bank account in someone else's name, or a change of business activity that does not match your returns, can lead to a query later. Under Rule 10A the bank details must be furnished within 30 days of registration or before filing GSTR-1 or IFF, whichever is earlier, or the registration can be suspended.

Limits to watch

While a core amendment is pending with the officer, the portal may not let you file a non-core amendment, so plan the order of changes. Changes that alter PAN, or move the principal place to another State, cannot be done by amendment at all and need a new registration.
